The Beer

Laughing Ass Ale - "An American Light Lager with mild hops. Meant to compete for light beer (read: Bud Light) drinkers. It is what it is." We wrote this for another review, but itís very fitting. We couldnít even detect the hops. It had a wonderful wort aroma, but it did not translate into the water-bodied finished product.

Stonecutters Pale Ale - More body than the first, but still too light. The hops are too mild. Slight malt, tiny caramel. Mix a Coors Light with a Heineken, and there you go.

The Mexican (Ale) - Ranked one and two on our lists for Bricktown, The Mexican is a good representative of Mexican Ales (not Corona, the others). Light, easy bodied, this amber would be good to drink all night. It should be very popular. The accompanying lime really sets off this beer.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Honey Wheat - One word: mildmildmildmild. Itís a good beer, but just too light. Roger says, "Wheat? They must have filtered it out. May be good as a training-wheel wheat.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Ale - Complex aroma: alcohol, cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla. Dry. Rudolph makes you pucker, and it is properly hopped. There is a nut/nutmeg taste that quickly snaps in your mouth while the light spice slowly fades. A good finish.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Black Eye Stout - Number one on Rogerís list. Very much like a dry stout, but leans toward a roasted caramel flavor more than a coffee flavor. Also, nice and creamy. Roger says, "I canít get enough of this."

Discussion with Brewmaster

The brewer is Josh. Actually, they contract for the recipes and wort while hopping and fermenting on premises.

The Atmosphere

The basement level is the only level currently open. On the main level, there is soon to be a restaurant opening. We'll get to that when it happens. The basement is divided into two sections, a dance club with standard bar (The Underground) and what feels more like a traditional pub. As a dance club goes, it rocks. Apparently there are attractive people in Dubuque. They either patronize or work at Bricktown. Diverse age range of customers, still on the new bar/trendy list. The original brick walls show, and thereís even a cavernous side section with couches and a foosball table. Our friendly bartender/DJ did his best Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) routine.

Afterthoughts

The Mexican and The Black Eye Stout, for sure. Dan likes the Rudolph. The Laughing Ass, Stonecutters, and Honey Wheat are for lighter beer drinkers only. This is a brand new establishment, the only one like it in the city. Expect the beer to change as soon as a batch is sold out. As new beer is added, weíll amend the review.
