The Beer

Columbus Golden Ale - Hopped, light bodied and refreshing. Vienna malt and the hops come through as a Kolsch-like taste, but a bit lighter.

Columbus Pale Ale - Zaiga says, "It's the shit!" Grassy, caramelized aroma, butterscotch, copper color. I can feel the malt and body, but it isn't overdone. Big taste. The Crystal malt and Cascade hops strike a good balance, with neither being too extreme. The finish is interesting; I get a dry, then sweet for a second, then bitter aftertaste. This is a beer

IPA - Golden in color, light bodied, puckery-dry tartness, slight acidity.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Columbus Ohio Wheat Beer - Light body, light color. Not much to say. Put the lemon in it to start. It should be really popular among lighter beer drinkers.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Anton Ale - Light golden in color. Mild malt, subtle hop. Drinkable in quantity. Literature says, "crisp and lager-like." Anton Ale is available only at the airport satellite.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Columbus Apricot Ale - Golden to copper in color. The initial fruit taste and smell are overpowering, but lessen with acclimation. It's in between a fruit beer and straight ale (which was probably the idea).
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Oktoberfest - Nothing much to say, again. Forgettable.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Columbus Nut Brown Ale - Full-bodied coffee flavor, like a brown porter. The flavor really attacks the taste buds and roof of the mouth. It's like a strong hazelnut coffee. The nut flavor becomes more prevalent, and it has a nice malty nut aftertaste.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Columbus 1859 Porter - A good, solid Porter with a healthy sediment of flakes in the bottom. I taste banana undertones. The finish is quick and slightly sweet, featuring English hops.

Discussion with Ben Pridgeon

Ben Pridgeon, haven't talked to him yet. Head Brewer is David Eldridge.

The Atmosphere

I spoke with Jenny and Natalie, two OSU law students. They like CBC beer, but don't really order them in quantity. One or two of each kind is enough. The dinner must be good; Bud/Bud Light drinkers surrounded me. Why else would they come here? CBC is a Cameron Mitchell restaurant. He owns several in the area. Natalie loves the spinach dip and has heard good things about their salads and pizza. I just had a cheeseburger and garlic fries. Only so much one could say about that. CBC is out of the way and private with an inviting feel. I like the wavy bar and the iron-type-modern-art hanging from the ceiling and the large glass windows that face east (I believe). Also, a liquor counter is hung from the ceiling at about six-seven feet. Jazz played in the afternoon and Foo Fighters in the evening. What a mix.

Afterthoughts

No hugely over-the-top great single beer, but I liked the Nut Brown, Porter, and Pale Ale. Again (not coincidentally), the PA and Brown are award winners. Also, give the bartender, Todd, a raise. He worked the bar solo when there were 30 patrons, plus table drink orders. He prefers darker beer and likes the Nut, Porter, and Oktoberfest.
