The Arrival

We got there at about 8:00 on a Saturday night. The outdoor patio dining area was actually bigger than the inside of the restaurant. Being such a beautiful night, we decided to sit outside (there are only five barstools inside, anyhow).

The Beer

They normally have four brews on tap, but one was out. Also, there was a shortage of the regular East Kent (UK) hops they use in the IPA, so the closest match was an American Golden. The brewery assured us, though similar, the hops give a more "resin-y" flavor. The sampler was served in an attractive square wooden rack with each brew clearly marked with a small flag at the base. Very classy. And the fourth sampler was replaced by premium microbrews/regionals that they carried. So go there for their fine selection, if nothing else.

Stockyard IPA - The IPA was, in fact, more resinous in the mouth advancing to a sharp aftertaste that tapers off quickly. Mike says,"'bit of a citrus smell and aftertaste that lingers just long enough to remind you that you've just had a good brew, but not too long."

Wild Brunette - Interesting name. We all know plenty of Blondes and Reds (beers), but the wife of the brewer wanted to know why there were no brunettes. I guess he took care of that. The Wild Brunette is described as a Wild Rice Brown Ale. Almost to spite (as he calls them) the "Style Nazis," the brewer wanted to create an original that didn't necessarily fit neatly into the style guidelines. The aroma was described to us as "kind of like when you open an olive jar." This was on the money, for both the smell an

Old Eight Porter - Again, interesting meaning behind the name. The brewpub is on Old Highway 8, plus the brew contains just under 8% alcohol. Double entendres are fun, even without the sexual connotation. A good medium bodied porter, but the aftertaste kicks in and you start to feel the 8% alcohol. It just keeps getting stronger and really works the saliva glands. The caramel taste also increases as one drinks it, and it soon becomes apparent that this is not a beer to drink in quantity. Roger agrees. "Very smooth

Discussion with Brewmaster

Awesome guy. He came and talked to us for quite a while, even though it was apparent he was busy. We talked about beer meant "to behoove the Beer Nazis," and he was a really cool, very down to earth younger guy. Like just Will at the Cambridge Brewing Company, he remained humble and refused to call himself a Brewmaster. There are two kinds of beer enthusiasts (just like I've noticed with cigar people): One loves to look down at you and feel superior, while the other is so into it, they love to share, and their eyes light up the whole time. This man was definitely the latter. And so knowledgeable.

The Atmosphere

A good mix a class and relaxed mood. There was a live band playing, so we sat in the back of the outdoor area so we could carry on a conversation. Great during the summer; I don't know about winter with so little seating available indoors. All the staff and management were so helpful to us "review guys" (as they called us).

Afterthoughts

I wish I could say more about Barley John's. With only three of their true offerings to sample, it's hard to judge them on a whole. We'd like to hear from some regular patrons about some of the selections we missed.
