The Arrival

Another impromptu visit. My wife and I were visiting a friend, Val, in Chicago. Flatlander's was near our hotel and we had heard good things about their food. Upon arrival about 10:30 pm, there Karaoke was in full swing. Not being in the mood for a crowd we settled into their restaurant area. Flatlander's seems to focus more on being a restaurant then a pub.

The Beer

Flatlander's Light - Water. Brewed as a very pale pilsner, it would be a good cross-over for Old Style Light drinkers.

Lincolnshire Lager - Very light, although not as light as the Flatlander's Light, and smooth with a long lasting, but mild, malty after taste.

Olde Orchard Ale - I usually avoid fruity beers, but this was mild enough to enjoy without the over whelming sweetness. It had a distinctive green apples taste, Valerie commented that it was “not tart... not excessively tart.” It should be noted that they change the flavor to reflect the season.

Abe's Honest Ale - This, American Pale Ale, was billed as their hoppiest beer. It was a very smooth, but I was expecting a hoppier finish. Or, as Valerie worded it, “It has a ghost of a taste. Your not sure if you got a taste of it, so you need to take another taste.”

Harvest Amber Ale - An English Pale Ale with “a crisp ending,” as Val put it. I detected just the slightest hint of burnt caramel in the the taste.

Locomotive Stout - Irish Style Stout served under nitrogen. Always a pleasure to have a Stout served under nitrogen to kill the carbonation. Short on the bitterness you would expect from a Dry Stout. Overall it was my favorite.

Discussion with Greg Browne

We had arrived quite late. Consequently, the Brewmaster, Greg Browne was not there.

The Atmosphere

Their dining area was exquisite, a large fireplace and high cathedral ceiling, attributed to a alpine ski lodge feel. I only took a quick peek into their bar area, it was very crowded with the Karaoke in place.

Afterthoughts

They have an India Pale Ale listed as there seasonal brew, on their website. Although I saw nor heard any mention of it while I was there. This may be due to the fact that I was seated in their restaurant and not at the bar. Disappointed though.

Overall, I enjoyed the Locomotive Stout, it was a great finisher beer for the evening. If I return for an early dinner or lunch I would like another pint of their Olde Orchard Ale.
