The Beer

Kenosha Gold - A Czech styled pilsner, this one surprised me. I was expecting the usual watered-down maltiness that most brewpubs market as their mass appeal transition beer. But, Art (Brewmaster) hops it up a bit, giving a stronger body and a longer lasting after-taste.

Publite - This is Art's transition beer for mass appeal. Very light for those making the crossover from Bud Light to a microbrew.

Icemaster - Crisp and light for the American macro-brew lover with just a little bitterness to take the shame out of being "crisp and light".

Cherry Ice - A favorite of the ladies. Tastes like the Icemaster with a shot of Cherry Juice.

Ranger Red - Again Art hits you with a little more hops then you would normally expect.

Mai Bock - This one really took me for a loop, although this was a accidental event. Art explained that a bad gasket led to a low carbonation batch. I'm glad he didn't throw out the batch because I really enjoy the flatter styled beers and this made it a treat for me. The Mai Bock is a local favorite.

Wheat - Light hop & graininess with just a hint of clove. Served with a slice of lemon, it went well with the Lake Perch.

Southport Amber - A fine session beer. Moderate hop and a perfect malt/bitterness balance.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Brown Ale - YES!" Hop bitterness followed by Homer Simpson yum sound. Low carbonation, brown malt aroma with a mild caramel flavor, a slightly nutty character and a mild bitter/dry finish. I picked up a growler of this for the trip home.

Koelsch - After noting my beer preferences and taste for the Mai Bock, Art disappeared and came back with this surprise. A germen-style Koelsch still in its infancy Art let us sample the batch. It's low carbonation will be higher when finished but Art was right-on that I would like it now. A well balanced beer perfect for a session beer, pale gold, light hop aroma, finishes dry and crisp. What the Icemaster aspires to be.

Discussion with Art Steinhoff

If you get the chance, talk to their Brewmaster; Art Steinhoff. You can tell right away that Art loves what he does. He enjoys a great deal of freedom in his craft but in the end he lets the patrons of Brewmasters Pub determine his recipes.

The Atmosphere

Located on the corner of the block it was very easy to find. Brewmasters Pub is dimly lit, how I remember restaurants pre 90's. The restaurant dominates the facilities and is very family-friendly, I would definitely stop back for lunch with my family. Overall it reminded me of a German styled family restaurant/VFW once so common in southern Wisconsin. A welcome sight in the sea of packed seating Fridays/Applebee's/etc

Afterthoughts

The friendly staff, great food and superb beer tick-me-off that they aren't located in my hometown. Try their beer-battered anything, although regretfully they were out of the Alligator. Their Calizone was a quick favorite of Terry's, "not greasy at all, huge and loaded with Cheese...it was awesome."

EmoticonWhile there is restaurant at this location, it is my understanding that it is no longer a brewpub.
