The Arrival

Southwest Wisconsin. Probably the earliest Midwest settlements by Europeans beyond the Great Lakes. Mining history. Wisconsin's first state capital nearby. The doors to the Restaurant and Pub open to an interior of limestone walls, exposed oak ceiling beams, and pine flooring. We expected we were in for a treat. The early afternoon sunlight and fierce no smoking policy lit up the room with a cheerful warmth.

The Beer

A 4-ounce of each beer sampler platter is always a good starting place. We were amazed they didn't offer one. We were, however, treated to free samples before making a purchase.

American Wheat - This was the lightest and most innocuous of the five offered that day.

Pointer Pale Ale - Nothing out of the ordinary. I was waiting for one beer to jump out and grab me and ask, "Damn, how did you ever get along without me?"

Dunkel Dopple Weizenbock - This was a unique entry. It had a robust, but smooth aftertaste we like to call smoky-oaky. It's self-explanatory.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Victorian's Secret Oatmeal Stout - The Outmeal Stout distinguished itself from the Dunkel solely in one word: more. More smoky, for one.
Reviewer's Rating: n/a

Schwartzbier - Along with the Dunkel, the more enjoyable of the five. Czar, our resident man of few words, especially loved its finish. "No lingering aftertaste. Stays just long enough in your mouth."

Discussion with Jeff Donaghue

The Brewmaster was unavailable at the time of our visit.

The Atmosphere

A medium-bodied cigar would've been a nice complement to the Dunkel Dopple Weizenbock. It's a fair trade off for the absence of cigarette smoke. We ordered lunch. Something along the lines of California Burgers and fries. Good, greasy pub food. The burger was a little shy of the monstrosities so often served in pubs. Emily was our bartender/waitress. Emily was a couple weeks from heading off to college for the first time and, bless her underage heart, was unable to directly recommend a beer. She was pleasant, smiling, and very helpful. Emily has the honor of being our first Brewpub Superstar. Check out her picture on this page. For those interested in staying in historical Mineral Point, the Victorian style rooms of the upstairs inn are available for $95-$165 per night.

Afterthoughts

It was a nice afternoon. All five beers on tap were quality. Not a bad one in the bunch. But perhaps not really more than one or two that sticks out a month later. I fear we may miss a seasonal treasure, so I am eager to return to this promising establishment.
